Valencia’s beach: how to get there from the city centre and what to expect
Valencia has a city beach. You can be on the sand in just 20 minutes from the city centre by public transport. This is unusual for a landlocked capital city — although Valencia does technically border the Mediterranean — and is one of the city’s major attractions for summer tourism.
THE BEACHES CLOSEST TO THE CITY CENTRE
Malvarrosa Beach is the best known and most accessible. It has a promenade, beach bars, restaurants and all the basic facilities: showers, toilets, lifeguards in season and shaded areas. In summer it flies the Blue Flag.
Las Arenas beach is just south of Malvarrosa, with no visible separation between the two. It is somewhat quieter and boasts the city’s most famous paella restaurants right by the sea.
Cabanyal beach lies between Las Arenas and Malvarrosa, in the neighbourhood of the same name. It has the most local atmosphere and attracts the fewest tourists.
HOW TO GET THERE
The T4 tram line from the Las Balsas de Valterna stop goes as far as Malvarrosa. From the city centre, the most convenient option is to take the metro to Neptú station and then the tram, or to take bus routes 19, 20, 21 or 22 directly from the centre. The journey takes between 20 and 30 minutes.
If the weather is good, you can also cycle there: the route through the Turia Gardens and along the riverbed takes you to the beach in about 40–50 minutes at a leisurely pace. It is one of the most pleasant urban routes.
WHAT TO BEAR IN MIND
In July and August, the beach gets busy before 11:00. If you want a quiet spot, go early. The easterly wind can kick up quite a bit of sand in the afternoon. The beach bars are open in high season, but some charge beach terrace prices, so check the menu before you sit down.
From the Hotel Conqueridor, you can reach the beach by public transport without any complicated changes. The hotel is in the city centre, which is also the best starting point for any plans in Valencia. Book your stay here.
